Abstract

The social media has affected every aspect of human life. Like two sides of a coin, it has both positive and negative impacts. One of the positive impacts is that communication becomes easier, while the bad side can harm those addicted social media users. This study describes the level of use of social media among students of UIN Alauddin Makassar and tries to relate the digital library as an alternative or escapism. This survey research obtained the data through student respondents of UIN Alauddin Makassar to identify social media usage among students. The sample is chosen by random sampling technique. The study used a mixed method to relate the use of social media and digital libraries as escapism. The result of the study showed that the level of use of social media by students is very high and the presence of digital libraries is expected to attract the attention of social media addiction. This research is expected to become a reference for university libraries that seek to increase the use of their digital libraries.
